Group History
OUR GROUP HISTORY
Encouraged by the fact other people think this is a good idea I have finally made a bit of time to start putting together some of the fragmented bits of the group\'s history.
There is a live and interesting discussion about bits of group history in the Group Discussion Board which you can access by clicking here (you must be a registered member of our site or signed in to see this). Other interesting areas of discussion relate to our Old Scout Hut and some mentions of the Grid Iron
If you have any information about our group then you have so many ways to let us know: 1) You can say something in our Forum 2) You can email webmaster@scoutgroups.co.uk 3) You can send a Personal message (PM) to the Web Team 4) You can come and talk to us at one of our events (A Car Wash, Church parade or similar)
we wear on our neckers.

INFORMATION
The following bit's of information have been collected from the forum amongst other places.
The starting point has to be the date St Laurence Scout Group was registered with the SA:
5 July 1928!
And then from there:
Danmum - Peter and Jean Rookes (around 6 years or so at the end of the 80s / beginning of 90s) They said they started helping when Bob Mayne was Scout Leader, and when he moved to become Venture Scout Leader, they took over as Scout Troop Leader. They said it was a thriving time - 45 in scouts and a waiting list, and the year before they finished he said they won every scout trophy there was in the District (South West as it was then), except the football which was won by Northfield Meths.
Danmum - I\'ve done extensive research and have found that at some indeterminable time in the past (and we\'re being very vague here but suspect it was between end of 1950s and end of 1960s) there was a bit of a demise of scouting and some weakening groups. Apparently they either started, or boosted the cub pack at St Laurence by amalgamating 2 other packs - one from Bournville and one from Masshouse. "Villemass" just didn\'t work, hence "Massville" was born. I don\'t know who decided on the spelling ! I know it wasn\'t a completely new pack, as my same advisor told me that at one time, St Laurence Group was known as 1st Birmingham, and only became 206th in a re-mix many years ago.
Barthez - "I might have links with St Lawrence because many years ago I was a Scout at Masvil Scout Group which was in Hole Lane, the Group lost its headquarters because of redevelopment and we moved to somewhere in Heath Road. I did\'nt go because it was too far to travel"
Barthez - Our HQ was in hole lane off the Bunbury road it was the out building to the big house that is still there where the road bends. The access road to the estate was the entrance to our hut. We are talking early 60s we moved in 1964 to Heath Road, I was only a strip of a lad then we had the Baden Powell hat Sky blue shirts, shorts garters, patrol flash, lanyard the full works. It used to be a pig to keep the hat flat, we had to starch it, we were always in trouble from skip for putting our hats on the tents when on camp. Our scout Leader name was Ivan Gough, we had no electric so in winter we had a wood fire, tilley lamps and calor gas, it was great.
Barthez - "from reading about the formation of your group that you did join up with Masvil Scout Group in 1975. So it looks like Masvil only carried on for another 10 years from when I finished, does this mean I'm the only link with Masvil Scout Group on your site or is there more?
Chil C - I only joined St laurence at Scout level (was in cubs at Northfield Meths!!). When I joined there were still 2 Scout Troops, one was called Masvil Scouts (as it is today) and the other I can't recall the name of, this was the one I was in.
This would have been around 1981 to 1986
The one I was in was run by Colin Peach and Barry Rossiter and there were about 30 of us. I think (!) we used to meet on Wednesdays.
This Troop closed down in the end due to lack of Leader.
I do have a contact to Barry Rossiter so will ask for some details from him
